Why the environment is important to me:
As a cyclist, the environment is vital to my everyday health and wellbeing. Training outdoors I can feel, and see, that bit of smog over the city, or those trees that have been cut down (or planted). We demand a high level of cleanliness from our food; you likely wouldn't eat an apple without washing it first. So why do we accept anything else from our air? Most of us only eat 4 or 5 times a day, but we are breathing constantly. Just as we have the power to wash that apple, we have the power to make a difference and clean up the environment.
Why I'm a Clean Air Champion:
I believe that the health of the environment and our health as humans are not two separate issues but instead are entirely dependent on each other. A healthy human population that chooses cycling and walking as transportation promotes a healthy environment by reducing their green house gas emissions. Likewise, a healthy environment, with its pure air, clean water and nutritious foods, will make for healthy people who are in turn able to do more for the environment. The model of Clean Air Champions is perfect to encourage the single goal of a healthy environment and population.
