Why the environment is important to me:
The environment is important to me both as an athlete and a human being. Last year competing in Europe I don't recall a single time racing on REAL snow. We were racing on man-made snow often times in t-shirts. I couldn't help but thinking "there must be something wrong...". Even though I don't currently suffer from asthma I am very conscious of the air quality. A couple of years ago while I was living in Prince George (notorious for air pollution) I can remember having to check the air quality notification on TV every morning before going out to train. If the air quality wasn't good for the day, you could either count on coughing for your entire training session or having it cancelled! It's a lose lose situation. Being exposed to such pollution on a daily basis obviously has it's toll on athletic performance as well! It's time to turn it around.
Why I'm a Clean Air Champion:
My passion for planet sustainability began a few years ago when I spontaneously popped in a video at my friend’s house while I waited for her to come home. The video outlined the devastating effects of the meat industry and gave very graphic and very real evidence of the harm that this industry is doing to our planet. For this reason I immediately adopted a vegetarian diet and have been a proud vegan for the past six months. Throughout high school I did several research projects on global warming and have studied various aspects including the deterioration of our tropical rainforests (aka the worlds lungs). I have been to many educational talks and presentations and continue to educate myself and incorporate new ideas into my own life.
